Unreciprocated Energy: A Struggle for the Reliable Friend

Hello, beautiful souls!

I’m Lex, and today, I am going to talk about a subject close to my heart - setting boundaries and protecting your energy, especially if you are known as the ‘reliable friend’ in your group. You know the one - the person everyone leans on, seeks advice from, and shares their problems with. If that sounds like you, then keep reading, because I believe this is a conversation we all need to have.

We all love our friends. Those unpredictable, beautiful connections that sometimes leave us feeling unbalanced and underappreciated. We listen to their stories, wipe their tears, and give advice even when we are drained ourselves. Being the reliable friend is not a bad thing, but it can be incredibly draining, especially when the energy you put out isn't reciprocated.

The truth is, being the reliable friend often means you’re the go-to person for everyone and their issues. That’s a lot of weight to carry. Sometimes, you just want to escape and act like you don’t know anyone. To take a break. And that’s okay.

Setting boundaries and understanding that no one is entitled to you or your energy is crucial. You are allowed to say no. You are allowed to prioritize your own needs. This doesn’t mean you are not a good friend. It means you respect yourself enough to acknowledge your own limits.

Maintaining balanced expectations in friendships is another aspect we need to address. We need to understand that our connections with others are a privilege and should be valued as such. Honest conversations, showing respect, and realizing that everyone has their own life to deal with is key. It’s okay to communicate when you feel the energy you put into certain people is not reciprocated. You have every right to spend your lifetime how you want.

Lastly, let’s talk about the importance of honesty and accountability. You do not need to be everything to everyone. It’s okay to express how you feel, even if it seems scary. Remember, you should be selfish with your mental health and your time. Those are your assets. Do not wait until you are down and out to take time for yourself.

This journey of setting boundaries and protecting your energy is one that is continuous. There will be ups and downs, moments of clarity, and times of confusion. But remember, it's okay to protect your energy and prioritize self-care.

Remember to tune into our podcast for a more in-depth conversation on this topic. I promise you, it’s one you won’t want to miss.

With love,

Lex.
